History of the hot dog
The origins of the hot dog date back hundreds of years with sausage being one of the
oldest forms of processed foods. The term "hot dog" seems to have originated sometime in the 1800's.
It is said to have been coined by German immigrants coming to America. The term first began
to appear in college magazines in the 1890's, with the first official reference to "hot dogs" in the
October 19th, 1895 issue of the Yale Record.
The term "hot dog" is less than 130 years old, but the frankfurter is said to have been developed
in Frankfurt, Germany in 1487. While the frankfurter has been around for over 500 years, it wasn't until
the 1860's that the sausages were placed on what are now known as hot dog buns.
